A distinctive black jade bead rope necklace featuring a one-of-a-kind silver antique ojime with a blooming tsubaki (or, camellia) — a symbol of love and devotion — and the artist's etched signature, circa 1860. Ojime date back to 19th century Japan. In order to carry their personal effects, men would attach a bag or box from a cord on their kimono sash, using an ojime to secure the contents inside. Believed to possess magical properties and often worn as talismans, they were enviable status symbols, giving prestige to those who wore them.
